The 7-Point Safe Cracker Buying Checklist
1. Buy from a Licensed Dealer Only
Every legitimate cracker seller in India must hold an Explosives Licence issued under the Explosives Act 1884. This licence governs storage, handling and sale. A dealer without a licence has no legal obligation to stock quality-tested products, transport them safely or verify that products meet BIS standards.

2. Verify BIS Certification on the Packaging
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification on cracker packaging confirms the product has been tested for compliance with IS 2551 (firecrackers standard). Look for the BIS mark on the outer box. Unbranded crackers with no BIS certification are the highest-risk products in any market.
3. Check the Sound Level (≤125 dB at 4 metres)
The Supreme Court order capped cracker sound levels at 125 dB measured at 4 metres. Legitimate licensed products comply with this — the sound level rating should be printed on the packaging. If there is no sound level information on the packet, do not buy it.

5. Check Storage & Condition on Receipt

6. Avoid "Loose" or "Unlabelled" Crackers
Loose crackers sold without original manufacturer packaging — common in local markets during peak season — have no traceable origin, no BIS certification and no sound-level compliance information. The risk of misfire and injury is significantly higher. Never buy unlabelled crackers.
7. Confirm Correct Expiry (for Older Stock)
