Diwali is brightest when everyone stays safe. Most cracker accidents are preventable with a few simple habits. Here are 12 practical cracker safety tips the whole family can follow.
Before you light: preparation
- Buy from a licensed dealer. Quality, tested crackers from a trusted price list misfire far less than cheap, unbranded ones.
- Read the label. Follow the lighting instructions and recommended safe distance printed on each item.
- Choose an open space. Burst crackers outdoors, away from buildings, vehicles, dry leaves and overhead wires.
- Keep water ready. Place a bucket of water and a bag of sand nearby to douse duds and small fires.
While lighting: the golden rules
- One at a time. Never light multiple crackers together, and never inside a container.
- Use an agarbatti or long candle at arm's length — never a matchstick held close.
- Never relight a "dud". Wait several minutes, then soak it in water. Unexploded crackers can still go off.
- Keep a safe distance after lighting; do not lean over the cracker.
- Tie back loose clothing and avoid synthetic, flowy fabrics that catch fire easily.
Protecting kids & pets
- Adult supervision always. Children should only handle sparklers with an adult present, wearing covered footwear.
- Comfort your pets. Keep animals indoors in a quiet room; the noise frightens them.
After the celebration
- Dispose safely. Soak all burnt and unused crackers in water before throwing them away.
First aid for minor burns
For a small burn, hold the area under cool (not ice-cold) running water for 10–15 minutes, cover loosely with a clean cloth, and do not apply toothpaste, oil or ointment. For eye injuries, deep or large burns, seek medical help immediately — do not rub the eye.
